Serbia: Ten Years On

Ten years ago, NATO began the bombing campaign against Serbia. We were not in Serbia at the time; we were watching news reports from our comfy home in Houston. But through our tears, we prayed for the people of Serbia and Kosovo, knowing that God was calling us to go to Serbia. We were in the application process with the IMB at the time, and clearly heard God's call. Our hearts ached for the people. Now that we have been here for eight years, our hearts still ache for the Serb people. While people have moved on, the scars are deep - not only from the NATO bombing, but also of the civil war in Yugoslavia during the first five years of the 1990s. While much has been rebuilt, many people still hurt emotionally, spiritually and physically. There is still a hopelessness among many - the frustration of life echoed in Ecclesiastes. There is an incredibly high rate of cancer, leukemia, and heart disease caused by uranium in the bombs and the stress of the time. Pray with us that Serbs would turn to the Lord for healing, forgiveness (receiving for their own sins and for the ability to forgive those who hurt them), and hope.
